Columbia, located in central Maryland, began with the vision that a city could better the quality of life of its residents. James W. Rouse, a visionary developer, saw the new community in terms of human values, rather than merely economics and engineering. The community has Columbia was designed to eliminate the inconveniences of subdivision design and eliminate racial, religious, and class segregation. Columbia’s population has grown ten-fold, there are thousands of people and businesses. The focal point of the community is the Mall in Columbia, a large regional shopping mall with 5 department stores and over 200 smaller stores and restaurants.
